Best of the Dubai Airshow

A formation of nine Royal Air Force Red Arrows Hawk aircraft fly above the Burj
Dubai, alongside a Boeing 777 aircraft.

Shaikh Mohammed leaves an Airbus A380. Airbus eclipsed its competition by
winning a $31 billion order for 131 aircraft from Emirates during the air show.

Visitors are dwarfed by the size of the Airbus A380, the world's largest
passenger aircraft.

On the fourth day a large crowd gathered to watch the
stunning aerial display by the Red Arrows.

The red arrows perform in the record-breaking air show - the biggest in the
event's history.

A Cupid's Arrow in the sky is just one of the many breathtaking stunts performed
by the Red Arrows.

One of the big announcements at the air show was Emirates revealing the opening
of its Dh1.3 billion engineering centre on the north side of Dubai International
Airport.

A visitor looking at a miniture version of the Luftanza airlines executive jet,
one of many attractions inside the exhibiton hall.

Organisers say when the airshow moves into its new grounds at Dubai World
Central in 2009, it could grow into the world's largest airshow ahead of Le
Bourget in Paris and the Farnborough Airshow in the UK.

The old world’s tallest buildings, 1884

(click on pic for mightier version or go here for mightiest version)

published in 1884, the diagram above shows the 77 tallest buildings of the old world (europe, asia and africa) at that time. strangely, the 78th and tallest structure shown is from the new world: the washington monument. it stood/stands at 555ft and was completed the year the diagram was made. the tallest of the old world was number 34, cologne cathedral, at 510ft.

the buildings were colour coded depending on the construction materials used…

red tint=brick; stone colour=stone; pink=granite; purple=bronze, copper or lead; yellow=gold

just as a comparison, here are the current tallest buildings on earth…

The Longest Underwater Tunnel In The World

this strange-looking beast in tokyo is an artificial island and tourist attraction by the name of umihotaru (translation: marine firefly) which forms part of the tokyo bay aqualine, a bridge-tunnel that connects kawasaki and kisarazu.

cars can either drive over the 4.4km bridge to the island and park in order to admire the view or drive straight through to the tunnel entrance where they will be taken under the water for 9.5km until they reach kawasaki.

the tunnel is apparently the longest underwater tunnel in the world.
